” AS PRESIDENT, June 26, 1980, to “His Majesty / Juan Carlos I / King of Spain / Madrid”, in full:
I would like to thank you, and through you the people of Spain, for the opportunity to visit your country. Rosalynn, Amy and I deeply appreciate the generous Spanish hospitality extended to us. The many kindnesses shown me and my family by you and Queen Sofia were most thoughtful. I was honored by your luncheon, and I particularly value our wide-ranging exchange of views.
Thank you also for the lovely bronze statue of a deer. It shall serve as a reminder of this enjoyable visit, and of the ties of friendship that bind our two countries. I hope that in the near future you and Queen Sofia will find it possible again to visit the United States, where you are much admired and respected.
Carter has signed the letter but lightly struck-through part of the text and had it retyped because he felt the need to strike through “deer” and write below “It’s a stag.” Fortunately, the first version was retained and is offered here.
In late June, 1980, President Carter set off for an overseas trip to visit many foreign dignitaries. Starting in Italy, Carter met with President Pertini followed by a stop in Vatican City to meet with Pope John Paul II. His next stop was Yugoslavia to meet with President Mijatovic and then Spain to see King Juan Carlos and Prime Minister Suarez before ending his trip in Portugal with a meeting with President Eanes and Prime Minister Sa Carneiro.
Interestingly, this letter is dated the very day Carter met with the King.
